The French Embassy Funds Innovative Plastic Waste Management Solutions in Nigerian Universities
Abuja, Nigeria – October 2024: The French Embassy in Nigeria, through its Cooperation and Cultural Department, has launched the FRENCH EMBASSY FUND PROJECT 2024-2025 entitled "Plastic Waste Management in Nigerian Campuses." This initiative is part of the global effort to combat plastic pollution and aims to support young Nigerian researchers in developing innovative solutions for a healthier environment.
Funding for Research and Development
The project will provide funding to support research projects at selected Nigerian universities, focusing on innovative solutions with high added value in sustainable development, circular economy, qualitative value chain, gender inclusivity, and strong entrepreneurial potential.
Capacity Building and Knowledge Exchange
In addition to funding, the project will also include capacity-building activities such as training programs, scientific exchanges between Nigerian and French researchers, and mobility programs at a higher education level.
Partner Universities
Thirteen universities participated in the project, and five were selected by an independent selection committee. The selected universities are:
- Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife
- Alex Ekueme University of FUNAI
- Delta State University, Agbor
- University of Calabar
- Yaba College of Technology
Prize Remittance Reception
To celebrate the most commended projects, the French Embassy hosted a Prize Remittance Reception on October 9, 2024, at the Résidence de France. During the event, the French Embassy will present awards to the Vice Chancellors or representatives and project leads of the five laureate universities.
Project Goals
The funded projects are expected to be fully implemented and sustainable by December 2025. The ultimate goal is to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment in Nigeria by reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices in educational institutions.
Key Stakeholders
The project involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), the five laureate universities, the French Agency for Development, civil society organizations, and representatives from the Ministry of Environment.
