“We Almost Forgot”, a unique dance experience in Abuja
The Institut français du Nigeria and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Nigeria, in partnership with the Krump Dance Studios, join forces to improve the exposure of contemporary dance in Nigeria. After the successful “Dancing Cities” edition in May, this time the Institut Français brought to Abuja “We Almost Forgot”, a contemporary dance piece by the Nigerian choreographer Qudus Onikeku.
This contemporary dance performance featured on stage 5 dancers and one actress of varied backgrounds and identities (Nigeria, Gabon, Morocco, Algeria, Madagascar & France). Through the use of high energy movements, story-telling, singing and music, the piece aims at questioning the past, present and body memory.
The première of the show was held in Berlin on 17th June and was sold out for four nights. The artists then travelled to Lagos where they performed at the Freedom Park in the frame of the Lagos Live Festival.
Finally, the Abuja première was held at the National Universities Commission in front of an audience of 200 people. A unique and enriching experience for the Abuja public, who had the opportunity to express their feelings about the performance and discuss with the choreographer and cast at the end of the evening.
The next step of the project will be a dance workshop facilitated by Qudus for 16 young dancers, that will lead to a dance performance at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany on July 15th.
