Visit of the French and German Ministers for Foreign Affairs
Laurent Fabius, Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development, and his German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, made a joint visit to Abuja on October 27, 2014. This is the fourth joint visit of the two ministers, and the first one in sub-Saharan Africa.
|This diplomatic event, described as historic by Aminu Wali, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, has deepened the Franco-German cooperation with the continent and with ECOWAS, and the exchanges with Nigerian authorities about political, security and public health questions. Interviews with civil society highlighted the socio-political complexity of the situation in the north of the country (terrorism, Chibok Girls). Joint cooperation projects have been announced for the victims of terrorism and in the fight against the epidemic of Ebola fever.|
Particularly fruitful, this visit included :
A meeting with representatives of civil society : Christian and Muslim religious leaders, and one of the leaders of the movement ’#BringBackOur Girls’, among others.

A visit to the ECOWAS headquarters, where ministers met with Kadre D. Ouedraogo, President of the ECOWAS Commission (see press release attached, in French). The tour has confirmed the interest of France and Germany, and beyond them, of Europe, for increased cooperation with the regional organization. On this occasion the Minister made mention of the Franco-German idea of creating European ’’ White Helmets’ to offer a coherent and coordinated European response in case of natural disaster or epidemic.
