The French Embassy celebrates International Human Rights Day at the Institut français
On December 5, 2018, in celebration of International Human Rights Day, the Institut français du Nigéria hosted an audience of 150 people for the screening of Aïcha Macky’s documentary feature «The Fruitless Tree".
Macky’s multi-award winning Franco-Nigerien co-production is a subtle portrayal of the suffering of childless women in a deeply traditional and patriarchal society, who are unable to fulfil its expectations around motherhood. As the world celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (10th of December), this event was an opportunity to reiterate the crucial message that women’s rights are human rights.
In his welcome address, Jérôme Pasquier, Ambassador of France to Nigeria, emphasized that sexual and reproductive rights, in particular, are “an integral part of human rights and [...] an important first step towards the realisation of equal opportunities between women and men”.
The screening was followed by a rich debate between representatives of the United Nations Population Fund, French NGO Médecins sans Frontières, and a Nigerian civil society organisation, Education as Vaccine. The event closed with a cocktail reception.
