Handing over to Nigeria of a Nok statuette seized by French Customs

On the occasion of the visit to Nigeria of H.E M. François HOLLANDE, the President of the French Republic, The French Ambassador to Nigeria has undertaken, on Wednesday 26th of February 2014, the restitution of a delicately sculpted Nok statuette to Nigerian authorities.

It is an earthenware hollowed thin statuette head 17 centimeters high. On 18th January 2012, Customs officers of Paris international airport checked airborne packages from Benin to Spain. A statuette was taken to be analyzed by the Museum of Mankind, Paris which later certified that it was a Nok cultural work of art.

The General Director of the national commission of museums and monuments, representing Nigerian authorities, M. Yusuf Abdallah Usman has warmly thanked the French government for this new restitution and has celebrated the close collaboration between the French and the Nigerian government.

Please note that five Nok statuettes taken out in 2010 by the French Customs were handed over by this Embassy to Nigerian authorities in January 2013 as well as an Esié statuette stolen in Nigeria and taken out in July 2011 by the French Customs.
