A French curator and art critic meets Nigerian artists
From May 14th to May 19th the Institut français du Nigéria in partnership with the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) Lagos and the International Institute for Creative Development Abuja (IICD) organised two workshops on curatorial practices. The French curator, Caroline Hancock, facilitated both workshops at the invitation of the Institut français du Nigéria.
During the first part of the week, Iheanyi Onwuegbucha of the CCA in Lagos hosted a writing workshop titled "The Editing Room". 13 confirmed or emerging writers, artists, critics, PhD students, based in Lagos or working at Nsukka University took part in this 3-day critical writing workshop.
In the second part of the week, Nduwhite Ndubuisi Ahanonu of the International Institute for Creative Development Abuja (IICD), hosted a 2-day artists’ portfolio workshop with 13 photographers and artists from Abuja, Enugu and Cross River. Each artist also had access to individual sessions with Caroline Hancock during which they were led in a brainstorming session about modern and contemporary art pieces that inspire them.
The participants in Lagos and in Abuja were highly engaged and determined to acquire new knowledge and get feedback on their work. The workshop provided the chance to make new contacts and future collaborations are already in the works.
