French language teaching in Nigeria
This summer, between July and September, several groups of Nigerian teachers will be trained in different language centers in France (Besançon, Royan, Vichy and Paris).
In addition to the annual Embassy scholarships for teachers of French language at primary and secondary levels, professors also benefit from a cooperation project between the Ministry of Education of Nigeria and the French Embassy (support for French language in higher education).
52 instructors will benefit from these programms this summer:
15 teachers will go to the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA) in Besançon to improve their use of the French language and discover new class practices;
20 teachers’ trainers will spend a month at CAREL in Royan for the same purposes;
2 teachers from the French Institute of Nigeria (IFN) will be welcomed at the Audiovisual Center for the Study of Languages (CAVILAM) in Vichy to enhance their teaching methodology and contribute to the qualitative improvement of IFN in Abuja;
15 university and polytechnic professors will spend a week at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIP) in Paris to participate in the development of professional French language in Nigeria (FSP).
The variety of trainings reflects the dynamism of this sector, although the figures remain low in regard to the population and invite for continued efforts in this field.
